CPE Link established between New Zealand and Ireland

Delighted to share good news that from 24th August NZACPE (New Zealand Association for Clinical Pastoral Education) and ACPE Ireland (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Ireland) Ltd have signed an Agreement of Reciprocity between both professional bodies. The Agreement was signed by the respective Chairperson Rev Valerie Riches (NZ) and Fr Brian Gough (Ireland).

The origins of the journey can be seen in a visit to Cork by Ray Bloomfield (Supervisor in Rotorua). Subsequent discussions were initiated and undertaken by the respective Chairpersons - Roy Alexander (NZ) and Bruce Pierce (Ireland).

The agreement provides equivalency for Level 1 & 2 programs and includes Supervisory Reciprocity. ACPE(Ireland) is delighted with this innovative development with out partners in NZACPE. It follows on from a similar agreement between ACPE (Ireland) and CASC ( Canadian Association for Spiritual Care). Currently ACPE(Ireland) is in discussion with ACPE - the professional body in the United States.

On Wednesday 8th May the beautiful refurbished chapel at St. Luke’s Home was the venue for the presentation of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Certificates by Dr Paul Colton, President of St. Luke’s Home. The twelve week training programme brought five participants from Wexford, Dublin, Waterford and Cork.

Mr Tony O’Brien (CEO St Luke’s Charity) spoke of the centrality of Pastoral care within the life of St. Luke’s Home and how the CPE programme is viewed as integral part of the life of the Home. This year two students, Hilary Dring and Virginia Giglio undertook placements in St Luke’s Home and their contribution was celebrated by Dr Colton. Other institution placements were at Wexford Hospital, Waterford University Hospital, St Vincent’s University Hospital and Marymount University Hospital and Hospice. The Centre appreciated the presence of three mentors Canon Nuzum (Cork), Ms Hilda Plant (Dublin) and Rev. Sarah Marry (Coordinator of Chaplaincy at St Luke’s Home).

We were also delighted to welcome M AJ McNamara (CEO of Cork University Hospital) who had just announced his retirement. Rev. Bruce Pierce (CPE Supervisor) paid tribute to Mr McNamara for his constant support of CPE and his unfailing attendance at the Annual St Luke’s Graduation.

For the first time the Chapel allowed the residents of St Luke’s Home together with staff to attend the presentation ceremony and closing service

Cork CPE supervisor contributes chapter to new book on Paediatric Chaplaincy

On Thursday 7 June at Birmingham Children’s Hospital a new paediatric chaplaincy book “Paediatric Chaplaincy: principles, practices and skills” was formally launched as part of the annual conference of the Paediatric Chaplaincy Network of Great Britain and Ireland. This exciting new book edited by Paul Nash, Mark Bartel and Sally Nash draws the expertise of healthcare chaplains from around the world and different faith traditions to highlight best practice and skills for chaplains working with neonates, infants, children, young people and their families.

Daniel Nuzum who is a CPE supervisor at the Cork University Hospital CPE Centre contributed a chapter to this new volume on ministry amongst neonatal patients and those who cannot speak. Daniel drawing on his experience as a healthcare chaplain at Cork University Maternity Hospital sets out innovative ways to provide meaningful pastoral care for babies and their families in the neonatal period.

The Rev’d George Handzo (Research & Quality, Healthcare Chaplaincy Network, USA) describes this new book as the ‘now go-to teaching text and reference work in the field’.

Speaking at the launch Daniel said “As a CPE supervisor and practising chaplain and researcher involved in the education of future healthcare chaplains it was wonderful to be able to draw on the experiences of pastoral care from a world-class multidisciplinary team at Cork University Hospital and Cork University Maternity Hospital and to contribute to pastoral education and care in an international context.”

Mutual Agreement between ACPE(Ireland) and CASC

ACPE (Ireland) Ltd together with CASC (Canadian Association for Spiritual Care) formally signed an Agreement of Reciprocity at the recent Annual CASC Conference at Deerhurst Resort, Ontario on 25th April. President of CASC Rev Elaine Nagy and Chairperson of ACPE(Ireland) Rev Bruce Pierce signed this innovative agreement on behalf of their respective bodies. The agreement acknowledges the full mutual recognition of CPE Programmes and CPE Supervisory status. The journey to this important event took four years and it was celebrated with delight by both bodies. Gratitude is due Rev Dr Neil Elford and Kim Bustard (CASC) together with Aileen Walsh and Rev Pierce ACPE (Ireland)

ACPE(Ireland) joins a number of American professional bodies holding similar relationship with CASC and this was acknowledged in the presence of the Chairpersons of the following bodies: Elaine Nagy (CASC), Ron Oliver (Association of Professional Chaplains), Sandra Katz (Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains), Mary T O’Neill (National Association of Catholic Chaplains) as well as Clare Bamberg (AAPC) and Bruce Pierce (ACPE Ireland)

'An introduction to Clinical Pastoral Education for Healthcare' at UCC

‘An introduction to clinical Pastoral Education for Healthcare Professionals’ is a new CPD offering designed by ACPE (Ireland) Ltd and run in conjunction with the College of Medicine and Health at University College Cork and the Department of Clinical Pastoral Education at Cork University Hospital. This 10 week module draws on the principles of adult transformative learning and is designed to introduce multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to spiritual care, communication, self-awareness, reflective practice and self-care.

The first group of participants completed the fully-subscribed course on 28 March and included the disciples of nursing, midwifery, medicine and social care. The programme was delivered by CPE supervisors Dr Daniel Nuzum and the Rev’d Bruce Pierce and was awarded 30 CPD points from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and 30 CUE points from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.

Graduation Ceremony Northridge House, Cork 21st March 2018

Northridge House Education and Research Centre hosted a Ceremony of Presenting CPE Certificates on Wednesday 21st March following its Annual Programme. Six students completed the programme and travelled widely from Dublin, Waterford, Kerry and Cork. In the unavoidable absence of the President of St Luke’s Charity, Dr Paul Colton (Bishop of Cork Cloyne and Ross) the CEO of the Charity Mr David O’Brien together with CEO of Cork University Hospital Mr Tony McNamara presented the Certificates.
Those in attendance included family members of the students, mentors from placement sites,lecturers and staff from St. Luke’s Home.

Gratitude was expressed by the Supervisor Revd. Bruce Pierce for the on-going support of the Charity to the programme which is viewed as part of the Outreach Programme. Mr O’Brien celebrated the on-going relationship with Cork University Hospital as exemplified by the presence of the CEO Mr McNamara, chaplains and CPE Supervisor Rev. Dr. Daniel Nuzum. The course is aimed at all Healthcare professionals with direct clinical care and College Staff.

It has been accredited by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (Ireland) Ltd.

At the meeting the Company noted with regret the resignations of two colleagues who over the years had made important contributions to the life and development of ACPE(Ireland) and to Pastoral Education. Kathleen O’Connor, formerly at Cork University Hospital and St Theresa Kilmurray, formerly at St Vincent’s University Hospital were in their time Company Secretary and Treasurer of the body. A new television series starts on RTE One on Thursday September 28 at 10.15 pm.
Ministry of Hope is an uplifting and compelling series, sharing moments of joy, exhilaration and crisis with the men and women whose job it is to bring faith, hope and love to strangers in three very different Irish institutions.
This powerful and inspiring observational series follows three Irish chaplains over a whole year, as they reach out to people at their moments of greatest vulnerability, to counsel, inspire and care for them.
Margaret Sleator was the first ever lay chaplain in Dublin’s Mater Misericordiae Hospital when she started 13 years ago. Catherine Black is the new chaplain in Shelton Abbey Open Prison in Arklow, Co Wicklow. And Philip McKinley is the Church of Ireland member of a new multi–denominational chaplaincy team serving 17,000 students from all over the world at Dublin City University.
Their jobs are to give guidance, support and inspiration: to patients facing illness and death; to prisoners seeking redemption; and to students struggling with campus life. Their vocations are all steeped in deep faith. But, in an increasingly secular Ireland, the programme asks why we still rely on religious chaplains to shepherd us through life’s challenges?
In the first episode of Ministry of Hope, Margaret Sleator supports Sean O’Keeffe whose wife, Margaret, is critically ill in the Mater hospital. With their son, Jack, Sean is praying for a miracle, but the chaplain must also prepare them for the worst. In DCU, Philip McKinley helps first year students like 19 year old Aisha Siwar settle into university life at the start of term. Meanwhile, in Shelton Abbey Open Prison, Catherine Black counsels 33 year old David whose release date is approaching fast, knowing that the outside world can be just as challenging as prison itself.
Philip McKinley was appointed in 2015 as part of a brand new multi–denominational chaplaincy team to serve DCU’s hugely diverse population of students. He’s a layman with a passion for music, which has become a useful focus for activities in the Interfaith Centre at the heart of the Glasnevin Campus.

The three CPE Centers in Dublin and the Centre at Cork University Hospital have been accredited by the Healthcare Chaplaincy Board (HCB) with their remit of accrediting the original CPE Centres. The more recently established Centres in Ballyclare, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland and at Northridge House , St Luke’s Home Cork have just been accredited by the recently formed All Ireland CPE Accreditation Board (AICAB). The Director at the Centre in Ballyclare is Sr Mary Jo Cocoran and the Centre is supported by the Northern Ireland Healthcare Chaplaincy Association and Northern Ireland Department of Health. The Director at Northridge House is Rev Bruce Pierce and the Centre is supported as part of the outreach programme of St Luke’s Home, Cork.
The AICAB consisted of representatives of the following bodies – National Association of Healthcare Chaplains, ACPE(Ireland) Ltd, Chaplaincy Accreditation Board and the Northern Ireland Healthcare Chaplains Association. Fr Brian Gough is Chairperson of AICAB with the remit to accredit the CPE Programmes at the designated Centers. AICAB also involves an overseas CPE Supervisor to enhance objectivity and best international practice. On the February accreditation site visits to Ballyclare and Northridge House Rev. Dr. Neil Elford was part of the team. Dr Elford is a member of the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care and part of the CASC Centre Accreditation Committee. Currently he is Director for Spiritual Health Mission & Ethics at Providence Care & Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston, Ontario.

The TCD School of Nursing and Midwifery’s Spirituality Interest Group and Civic Engagement Committee are pleased to announce a public lecture.

Exploring spiritual assessment: definition, categorisation and features using a dementia-based scenario
Presented by: Professor Wilfred McSherry, Professor in Dignity of Care for Older People, Staffordshire University / Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust

The subject of spiritual assessment in health and social care practice raises a number of conceptual, practical, organisational and ethical challenges. These challenges undoubtedly influence the nature and manner in which spiritual assessment is perceived, approached and undertaken. It also raises a number of questions about quality and governance and providing evidence for this aspect of care. The lecture will be structured around a dementia-based scenario detailing a hypothetical person living with dementia, with their family in crisis.

Professor Wilfred McSherry was appointed Professor in Dignity of Care for Older People in August 2008; this is a shared appointment between the Faculty of Health Sciences, Staffordshire University and the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (United Kingdom). Wilf is also part-time Professor at Haraldsplass Deaconess University College, Bergen, Norway. He is director of the Centre for Health and Social Care Research in the Faculty of Health Sciences. He completed his doctoral studies at Leeds Metropolitan University in May 2005 researching ‘The meaning of spirituality and spiritual care: ‘An investigation of healthcare professionals, patients and public’s perceptions’.

The CPE Centre at Cork University Hospital (CUH) hosted a presentation from the Green Healthcare team. CUH is the holder of the World’s First Green Flag Hospital Award

CUH’s green initiatives have resulted in;

o savings of €96,318 in 2013;

o waste recycling rate up to 34%;

o three tonne reduction in food waste; and

o nine tonne reduction in clinical waste.

This talk will centre on what is considered best practice in responding to the needs of Humanist and others who do not hold to a religion. As part of the talk examples of good and bad practices will be mentioned which should lead to a better response to patients of all religions and none.

This paper considers the inevitable external factors that affect intrinsic and personally held perspectives of health and social care professionals concerning cultural care that is appropriate to individuals. It will contemplate the degree to which history, politics and media play a role in how we see ‘others’ in society.
Presented by: Mrs Gayatri Nambiar-Greenwood, Senior Lecturer in Nursing, Manchester Metropolitan University
Her research and teaching interest range from sociology and anthropology in healthcare, practical ethics, self-awareness and the delivery of humanized care. She is in her final stages of a doctorate level research study entitled, “What do patients perceive as Culturally Appropriate Care?”

Standard for Chaplains - HCB & CAB

In pursing a career as a healthcare chaplain in Ireland one needs to be aware of the required standards of two Boards currently operating.The Healthcare Chaplaincy Board, for those of a Roman Catholic tradition, had its standards approved… for use by the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference and the Conference of Religious of Ireland in 2013.

The Chaplaincy Accreditation Board accredits chaplains from the Church of Ireland and will considerable applications from those of other traditions / faith groups with appropriate tradition / faith group support. An excellent resource on competencies in Palliative Care. The chaplaincy / pastoral care section was a first collaborative project, by a number of palliative care chaplains combining with the chaplaincy bodies – National Association of Healthcare Chaplains, Healthcare Chaplaincy Board, Chaplaincy Accreditation Board and ACPE(Ireland).
